The Philosophy and Goals of Watch Metrics

Grading Watches:

  • A watch review will always be a partly subjective endeavor... however, Watch Metrics believes that the key features driving a watch's value (we define as 'importance' or 'utility') can be measured. These key features:

    • 1) Brand - prestige, value retention

    • 2) Interior - the movement, complications

    • 3) Exterior - the finishing, materials

    • 4) Wearability - too big or too small = penalty.

    • 5) Other - all other factors driving premium or discount for particular models; this includes limited production / historical significance.

  • Every watch owner will have their own prioritization/weighting of the key features above to determine the value of a watch to them. Some watch owners care more about Brand and Exterior...whereas others care more about the Interior and Other. Watch Metrics does NOT judge what is the correct weighting of key features but does aim to quantify such weightings for different groups of people so to measure value for each group.

  • The idea of various watch attributes having different relative importance is not a new concept but there has not been much attempt to quantify... Watch Metrics will try. Example from Deloitte's recent industry report:

  • Although generally closely related, the value of a watch can be quite different from the price ($) paid to acquire it. Watch Metrics aims to measure both:

    • i) absolute value - is this a better watch?

    • ii) value / price - is this watch a good deal?

Grading Watch Collections:

  • The collection value of a watch collection may be greater or less than the sum of the of individual watches' values. Consider a) collection of nearly identical watches from the same brand versus b) collection of watches diverse by type / brand expressing an interesting / unique theme... even if the aggregate value of both collections based on the underlying watch values are the same, one of the two collections is likely to have generated greater collection value from superior collection construction.

  • Just like grading individual watches, Watch Metrics aims to grade each watch collection by:
    • i) collection value - is this a better collection?

    • ii) collection value / price - is this collection a better deal?

  • Watch Metrics seeks to measure the collection value of different watch collections (and therefore the attributed value from collection construction).

  • Most watch reviews focus on identifying the better watch in isolation... but most watch buyers focus on what is the better addition to their existing collection. Watch Metrics also seeks to identify the incremental collection value of adding a watch to an existing collection.
